Ever wondered what preparation is needed for horses travelling from the UK to the rest of Europe? Well, wonder no more!

* Passports in the UK*

All horses MUST, by law, have a passport for travel - regardless of whether they are travelling 2 miles or 2000 miles. Some passports are classed as ‘Registered’ by Animal and Plant Health Agency. (APHA) (E.g. Weatherbys Ltd and other passports issued by a recognised Breed Society), whereas others such as Pet Id Equine, Horse Passport Agency, may be classed as 'Unregistered' meaning that there are additional stipulations for transporters regarding Journey planning and rest stops that need to be factored into the horses trip.
* To Vaccinate or not to Vaccinate?*
There are no specific requirements for horses to be vaccinated for travelling purposes, however this is often a personal choice made by the owner/ seller/ buyer. It is also worth checking up on the legislations for the country your horse is being moved to in case they have stipulations when you register your horse in a new country.
* Health Certificates*
All horses travelling to Europe will need official EU Intra Trade Animals Health Certificates (ITAHC) written in the country language of export and the country language of import. These are applied for and issued by the Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA) and forwarded to a nominated LVI vet. The vet should then sign the certificates off within 24-48 hours of thehorse leaving the country to declare that he/she is fit to travel and free from any visible contagious diseases. Many people worry about the vet check and whether the horse will pass, however it is a straightforward check – certainly not along the lines of a 5 stage vetting, and most horses pass muster providing they are fit and well.
* Export Declaration License *
When you check in at port you must hand over your Export license with the horses details, reason for transport, destination and organiser details.
